The Pilgrimage Centre

Welcome to Fernyhalgh – A place of Pilgrimage, Prayer and Peace

This ancient shrine of Ladyewell is to be found down a meandering country lane a quarter of a mile past the beautiful parish church of St. Mary’s which is the starting point for pilgrimages.

The white house, which can be glimpsed through the trees as pilgrims follow the route of their ancestors along the final section of Fernyhalgh Lane to Ladyewell.   Ladyewell House is set in its own picturesque grounds containing the Well itself, the Stella Maris (covered prayer chapel) and the larger English Martyrs Chapel.

Ladyewell House contains a small chapel and the reliquary (containing the relics of English Martyrs and the famous Burgess Altar). There is also a piety shop, bookshop and facilities for tea and coffee. There is disabled access to the ground floor facilities.

[QUOTE FROM BISHOP PATRICK]

‘Fernyhalgh is mysterious; it is not superstition. It is tranquil; it is not hysterical. Fernyhalgh has survived endless change and development-always responding with faith to the needs of the Church in the midst of our world. Even today it represents a haven of silence and prayer; a vibrant centre of pilgrimage and devotion for thousands of Christians. It is a place too, where divine power and providence operate through the sacred shrine of Blessed Mary, Queen of Martyrs.’ (Bishop Patrick O’Donoghue – Bishop of Lancaster)
